In 2013, for a variety of reasons, the annual summer camp in Belskoye-Ustye will have a different flavour.
Instead of focusing just on the children in the orphanage, we have expanded the project to be more of a community renewal program, hopefully bringing the orphanage and the surrounding community together. We are calling it the St John of Kronstadt Rural Festival, and there will be activities not only for the orphanage children but for the whole village and surrounding area. This new summer festival will be running from late May until the middle of August 2013, and we are expecting a number of volunteers and visitors from Europe and N. America as well as from elsewhere in Russia and nearby countries.
In addition to our usual children’s program of games, sports and fun educational and developmental activities, we will also be putting on various cultural events, doing work to clean and clear the foundation of the derelict village church, cleaning up the village (together with local people and orphanage children), helping with daily prayer in the church, and putting on movie nights, pot-lucks, weekly markets, etc. We are also beginning a community organic farm at ROOF’s Baranovo House, which will hopefully be the first of at least a couple of local businesses.
